The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo by Judy Blume

The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo is about a kid named Freddie.

Freddie has an older brother named Mike and a little sister named Ellen.  Freddie feels like he is the peanut butter part in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  He feels that way because he is in second grade, his little sister one year old and his big brother is ten.

Freddie finds out that there is going to be a school play, but when he asks his teacher if he can be in the play, she says that it is for fifth and sixth graders only.  She says she will talk to the director to see if he can be in the play.  When Freddie goes to the auditions, the teacher asks him to go up on stage and yell something.  Then she asks him if he can jump.  Then he gets to be the green kangaroo!

The fifth and sixth graders made his costume.  The day of the play, Freddie went up on stage and acted out his part.  Last, the teacher said that without Freddie, there would be no play.
